XGRIDS Pro Guide™ / Module 7: Advanced PortalCam

LCC Scan App Deep Dive

The complete field control interface for the PortalCam. Every scanning action, status indicator, and in-field decision point runs through it.

LCC Scan vs. LixelGO

LCC Scan is the PortalCam's dedicated field control app. It is not interchangeable with LixelGO. If you operate both a PortalCam and an L2 Pro, K2, or K1, you use LCC Scan for the PortalCam and LixelGO for the L2 Pro, K2, or K1. The two apps cannot be swapped or used across device types.

LCC Scan is available on iOS and Android. On Android, install the app via APK from the XGRIDS download link. On iOS, download it from the App Store. Both require Bluetooth, location, and hotspot permissions to be granted before the app can connect to the PortalCam.

Device Controls and LED States

The PortalCam body has two physical buttons: the power button and the device button. Understanding what each button does and what the LED states mean is essential for field operation, especially when the phone connection is unavailable.

LED Indicator Reference

Fast green flash means the device is saving. Do not power off. This is the same critical rule as with the L2 Pro, K2, and K1. When you stop a scan, the fast green flash indicates the project file is being written to internal storage. Powering off during a fast flash corrupts the project file. Wait for it to return to solid green before handling the device or removing the battery.

Audible Alerts

The PortalCam emits audible alerts at startup, shutdown, when battery drops below 20%, and when battery drops below 10%. These alerts are the primary low-battery warning in environments where you cannot monitor the LCC Scan interface constantly, such as when the phone is mounted on the tripod and the screen is not visible during scanning.

The Scanning Interface

During an active scan, the LCC Scan app displays the real-time scanning screen. The elements visible on this screen give you constant feedback about scan quality, device health, and coverage progress.

Scan Mode Selection

Before starting a scan, select the appropriate scan mode in the LCC Scan capture interface. The mode optimizes camera exposure and image processing for specific lighting conditions. Selecting the wrong mode degrades texture quality in the final 3DGS model, and the mode cannot be changed after the scan starts.

If a scene transitions between lighting conditions (for example, a building lobby with large windows opening to a dark interior corridor), select NIGHT. NIGHT mode handles the wider dynamic range more reliably than INDOOR, and the texture quality loss from using NIGHT in adequately lit areas is less than the quality loss from using INDOOR in poorly lit areas.

Top Status Bar

The top of the scanning screen shows three pieces of continuous status information: the current storage usage out of the 512 GB internal capacity, the device battery percentage, and the current scanning speed in meters per second. The speed indicator is the primary field tool for maintaining proper technique. The recommended scanning speed is under 0.5 m/s (1.6 ft/s). Do not exceed 1 m/s (3.3 ft/s). In corridors, dim lighting, doorways, and corners, slow to a maximum of 0.5 m/s (1.6 ft/s).

Posture Indicator

The posture indicator icon in the center of the screen changes state when the device tilt exceeds 60 degrees from vertical in any direction. Keep the device between negative 60 and positive 60 degrees at all times. A posture warning during scanning requires immediate correction. Continued scanning with the device tilted beyond 60 degrees produces point cloud distortion in those sections that cannot be corrected in post-processing.

Point Cloud Preview

The real-time point cloud preview occupies the main area of the scanning screen. It shows the LiDAR data being captured and updates continuously. Use the preview to confirm that the scan is capturing geometry, that coverage is building in the areas you are scanning, and that there are no sudden drops in point density that indicate a tracking issue.

Scan Timer

For Map Fusion projects, each segment must stay under 20 minutes. Monitor the timer and plan your segment end points so you stop before reaching the limit. Segments that run over 20 minutes cannot be used in Map Fusion.

Real-Time Alerts

The LCC Scan app displays banner alerts during scanning when specific problems are detected. Each alert requires action in the field, not after the scan is complete.

Action Buttons During Scanning

The LCC Scan interface provides four action buttons during an active scan. These are the in-field tools for all manual interactions with the scan project while it is running.

Control Point

Marks a physical control point location in the scan data. Used for Map Fusion alignment and absolute coordinate anchoring. Requires the device to be placed on a stable surface.

  • Requires LCC Scan App 1.2.0_p1 or later
  • Requires firmware V3.2.3-20251104 or later
  • Tapping adds the point. Do not power off within 5 seconds.

Measurement Point

Records the coordinates of a specific feature in the scan for reference. Used to label notable objects, infrastructure, or reference locations within the scan data.

  • Requires stable positioning at the target location
  • Name each point with a consistent labeling convention
  • Points appear in the project data after processing

Pause

Temporarily suspends scanning without ending the segment. Used for navigating through crowded areas, waiting for people to clear, or taking a short break.

  • Scan data is not lost during pause
  • Re-establish a loop closure before resuming to confirm tracking integrity
  • Do not pause for extended periods. Long pauses may require re-initialization.

Stop

Ends the current scan segment. Hold the stop button until the confirmation prompt appears. Confirm, then wait for the fast green flash to complete before touching the device.

  • A confirmation dialog appears before the scan actually stops
  • Saving begins immediately after confirmation
  • Device must not be powered off while fast green LED is active

Left-Hand Mode

LCC Scan supports left-hand operation via a toggle in the app settings under More Settings. This mirrors the button layout for operators who hold the device in their left hand. Check this setting before scanning if the default right-hand layout creates awkward reach during operation.

Dashboard and Project Management

The LCC Scan dashboard shows the project gallery with a card for each completed scan. Each card displays the scan date, duration, and a thumbnail of the scan data. Tapping a card gives you access to the scan details and the View Model option for mobile preview before transferring data to the workstation.

The device status panel, accessible from the dashboard, shows current battery level, firmware version, and connection status. Check firmware version here before starting a project at a new site to confirm the device is running the version required for the features you plan to use. Control point marking for Map Fusion requires firmware V3.2.3-20251104 or later.

Verify firmware and app versions before traveling to the site, not after arriving. Updating firmware requires a stable connection and at least 50% battery. A site visit is not the time to discover the device needs an update before the control point button will function.
